    Unknown Error message

    Hi,

I will be most grateful for anyone who can help with the problem I seem to be having. Every once in awhile, while working in simply a message comes up. A red circle with a white X & reads "An unknown error has occurred. To protect your company data, Simply Accounting will now shut down. Any unsaved data will be lost." It is most annoying and there doesn't seem to be anything in particular that triggers this. I haven't seen the message in months and in the past day and a half it has appeared 3 times! Shutting down my program each time. If I haven't been working on something then what ever I posted earlier is saved, however if I'm in the middle of posting things then some or all of them are lost. I would like to know what causes this to happen and how I can go about fixing it.

    Thanks.

    Roxanne

     Hi Roxanne,

Is your data on a server, are you opening it over a network?  I have seen this error message come up for clients when their network looses the connection to the file.  It's indicative of a problem with the network itself.  If possible, try moving the file to your computer and running it from there for a few days.  If you don't have any problems then we will know for sure that it's the network.

    Hi Nemanja,

No our data is not on a server.  It is installed on my computer and on another and we share the files.  I'm not sure if this is enough information for you. If not please let me know.

    Thanks

    Re: Unknown Error message

    Hi Roxanne,

How do you share the files?  I would imagine that the file is located either on your computer or on that other computer.  There is an easy way to check.  Open the file on your computer.  Once it's open, go to File-Properties.  The Location field will tell you where the file is by giving you a path to its location.  If that path starts with anything other than "C:\" then it most likely is not on your computer and you're opening it over the network (the other computer is acting as a server to you).

If this is true and you find that the file is not on your computer, does the other computer ever get any of these errors?  If it does not then we know that the network connection is causing the problem.  You may need to get a network technician to look at it.  One thing that they will want to do is configure the router so that it never closes the ports which Simply Accounting uses (ports  13531 and 13541).

There is something that you can do yourself; do not leave Simply Accounting running if you will not be using it for 10 min or longer.  When you leave it idle, your router can close the ports as it thinks that they are not being used, and then this can cause errors once you go back to using Simply Accounting.

    I hope this helps Roxanne!

    Re: Unknown Error message

    Hi Nemanja,

The file is located on my computer. Our files are in a "shared file" set up by a computer tech. Yes this message also comes on the other computer as well. When ever it does appear, regardless of which computer it appears on, both our simply programs quit working. When it appears on one computer and we haven't noticed it, what ever the other person has posted after the message appears will not be saved. Unfortunately shutting down simply when it hasn't been used for 10 min is not viable as it takes too long to bring it up again. We are in and out of the program constantly all day long. I might not be using the program, however the other person is and vice versa. I find it difficult to believe this is something that only we seem to be experiencing and that it can't be fixed. It is very frustrating.  Do you still believe it is a network problem and we should configure the router? I would hate to have to pay someone to come and do that if it really won't fix the problem. Our techs out here are quite pricey. Please let me know your thoughts.

    Thanks again

    Roxanne

    Hi Roxanne,

A problem like yours, involving errors that come up randomly, requires troubleshooting.  Unfortunately that's not something we can do effectively in the forum.  Please give us a call at 1-888-522-2722 and one of our technicians can take a look at your system and diagnose the problem.
